The Ventura Film Festival has earned recognition as "the largest film festival ever held in Ventura County." The Ventura Film Festival exists as an unrestricted genre international film festival that generates attention toward environmental issues such as terrestrial and aquatic preservation and renewal, through an annual film festival and complementary events. The festival utilizes the power of cinema to encourage participation and establish purposeful communication concerning these urgent ecological issues.

The Ventura Film Festival launched in 2004 and has screened hundreds of films, generally exceeding 200 films per summer season, and has captured notice from the global film industry. Since its inception, the festival has evolved into a major cultural celebration that unites movie directors, ecological activists, and attendees from throughout the world.

Memorable occasions have featured presenting celebrated filmmaker Dylan O'Neil, the inaugural world champion surfers Peter "PT" Townend along with Ian Cairns, four-time world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA competitor Fabio Leopoldo, and the 50th Anniversary of West Side Story, which involved hosting the full Academy Award winning cast from West Side Story, including Academy Award winner/Golden VENTURA COUNTY CALIFORNIA Globe winner George Chakiris as well as Golden Globe recipient/Oscar nominee Russ Tamblyn. The founding executive director of the Ventura Film Festival was selected to take part, together with many of Hollywood's biggest stars, in the 50-year anniversary event of West Side Story and Hollywood's prestigious footprint/handprint ceremony honoring Oscar winners Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, together with Golden Globe champion Russ Tamblyn at the historic Chinese Theater in Hollywood. This event also doubled as the official BluRay release by Fox and MGM of West Side Story, which is universally acknowledged by critics and fans as the ultimate musical of all time.
